Epson PictureMate Deluxe Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.56 (out of 10)
For the last week I've been testing a new portable printer from Epson, the PictureMate Deluxe, for consumers looking to replicate the quality of the professional photo print job. The goal is to deliver digital prints so crisp you'd frame them and hang them on your wall.

PictureMate Deluxe.
The PictureMate Deluxe is the second such printer from Epson. As with the first, the printer itself is about the size of a lunch box and works with or without a computer. It also supports pretty much every type of digital media you can imagine. And, improving upon the original, this model has a small color LCD display which helps you decide which pictures to print and which ones to delete.

Epson's aim is pretty obvious: To market the PictureMate as an inexpensive printer that is so easy to use that even digital photography novices appreciate it.

To find out if Epson has achieved that goal and if the PictureMate Deluxe is a suitable replacement for the old Fotomat shacks, read on.

This is a very neat, simple printer, giving superb quality prints with a minimum of fuss. Able to print directly from a PictBridge camera, just about any memory card or from your PC, it's also very versatile. With just a single ink cartridge for its six-colour print system, it could hardly be easier to maintain and since Epson has increased the number of prints from its PicturePack, it's also one of the cheapest photo printers to run. Hard to fault, really.

The original Epson PictureMate impressed us enough to earn the Editors' Choice for dedicated photo printers, and it has held on to that position against all comers. The PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition ($249.99 direct) maintains all the features we liked in the first PictureMate (from true photo-quality output to a low cost per print) and adds still more, most notably a color LCD to let you preview prints. That makes it a shoo-in as our new Editors' Choice.

Building on the original PictureMate, Epson's updated portable PictureMate 500 photo printer (also known as the PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Addition in the U.S.) adds a colour flip-up LCD monitor, improved menu system, speedier prints and battery support, allowing you output stunning quality photographs without having to connect it to a computer or mains adapter. It's also truly a product that anyone can use, whatever your background, for producing water and smudge-proof photos that will stay brilliant for years longer than any other digital printing option. Highly recommended!

When we reviewed the original Epson PictureMate, we noted that the solidly built, 5.5-pound, portable inkjet lacked only two things to make it the perfect carry-anywhere 4x6-inch picture lab: a color LCD for previewing and selecting pictures and a battery-power option. That's exactly what Epson has added to this upgraded 5,760-by-1,440dpi, six-color printer. It comes with a flip-up, 2.4-inch color LCD that can be used for previewing, selecting, and cropping pictures or displaying them in a slide show. And the company now offers a plug-in battery pack as a $69.99 accessory.

Epson's original PictureMate snapshot printer has been a PC World Best Buy ever since we first reviewed it in June 2004. Now, for about $50 more the company is offering the PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition, which addresses the few quibbles we had with the previous excellent version.

The most notable difference is the 2.4-inch color monitor that flips up from the top of the printer and lets you view and edit your photos.

A digital camera isn't a PC peripheral, so why should you have to connect to a computer to print photos? Thanks to Epson and other suppliers with portable printers, you don't. These standalone printers come with memory card and USB slots. Plug in the camera or a card, and you've got your own mini photofinishing shop in any room with an AC outlet. Or, in the case of the Epson, buy an optional rechargeable battery, and you can print anywhere.

You can't ask for a better, more convenient portable ink-jet printer than the PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition. Its speed and image quality are great. But the new 2.4-inch LCD, which offers thumbnail previews, and the optional rechargeable battery, make this little printer shine.

Review:"The Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition is a compact inkjet photo printer about the size of a lunchbox. With a handle on top, it practically looks like one - and an optional battery makes it just as portable.

Simplicity, convenience, and quality are the cornerstones of Epson's PictureMate Deluxe. It's compact, portable (with an optional battery), fast, and with six inks - 3 more than most compact printers in its category - it produces very lifelike images with good detail and saturation. If desk space is at a premium or if you want photos on the go, the PictureMate Deluxe is a solid choice."
